Debi Alper

East Dulwich Writers' Group

We are a small writers’ group based in south east London. We meet on a Saturday evening every 2-3 weeks, with about 4-6 people attending regularly. We meet in our homes and it's totally informal i.e. I send round an email giving details of the next group and whoever is available comes.

We're a mixed bunch of people of diverse backgrounds, ages and lifestyles. We find this works well, as you have an audience that might otherwise be unavailable to you. We're also a very gentle group – our aim is to make any criticism incisive but sensitive but most importantly constructive. We have all had varying success at getting published, so have amassed quite a bit of useful experience and contacts.
(See Nirvana Bites – the background to find out what I personally owe to EDWG.)

We each read our own work and discuss it together. Quite often new people choose not to read at their first (or more) visit until they feel comfortable enough. We all still get butterflies when we read, even having been doing it for years, so we recognize it can feel a bit intimidating to start with. Of course, if you want to read first time, that's fine too.

Of the regular core group, three of us write novels, one short stories and articles, one memoirs and the others are simply writing and will see what transpires.

The motivation, the criticism and even the experience of reading aloud have proved invaluable to all of us.

Please contact me if you are a writer based in south London and would like to come along and see if EDWG is suitable for you.
